“l’maskin” record release show, johnny brenda’s, philadelphia, pa 2/24/18

definitely one of the highlights of our 20+ years: our first time headlining johnny brenda’s to celebrate the release of l’maskin. we had our good friends kevin and ken open the show and both were amazing. We played 9 out of 10 songs from the new album and assorted taggart favorites. The four of us each chose a cover song which we scattered throughout the set and then threw in an elvis song at the end for good measure. here’s how it all went down:

l’maskin – the “alt” tag usually makes me suspicious but this veteran philly band has earned it. taggart‘s spent two decades making the sort of jangly, catchy, thrift-store t-shirt rock that would’ve fit nicely on a college radio playlist circa 1990. “i paid my dues in mostly empty rooms,” sings pete denton on the backward-glancing “infinite space.” “sing my tunes however i choose / do you dig my blues?” he and his brother steve share lead vocal duties, and everybody else sings backup. taggart — who boast a gigantic playlist for their live-band karaoke nights — have serious chops they show them off with agility and good humor on the new l’maskin. abbaye 15th anniversary party 1/20/18

this year we celebrated 15 wonderful years that the abbaye has been our favorite place to eat and drink in philly. as always we celebrated by performing live band karaoke for a packed house of abbaye employees and loyalists. this was the 12th year of karaoke and the quality of singers seems to get better every year.  this year’s song list hit a high of 248 songs and everyone took full advantage. we started things off with two of our originals and then the crowd took over the mic. as always we had some very special guests from the abbaye join us throughout the evening. in addition to the many employees who performed owner marc played drums on “queen bitch” and “the kids are alright’ (and an impromptu rendition of “the gold heart mountaintop queen directory”) and to start off the second set owner meghan sang david bowie’s “heroes” (which was kept off the list as her surprise song) and later on her annual favorite “glad girls’. The night ended at almost 2:30 with our friend steve on top of the bar belting out “(what’s so funny ’bout) peace, love and understanding”. it was another amazing year at the abbaye and all 48 songs performed are listed below for those of us who’s memories of the night are a little hazy.
