we took these because we needed a picture to send in with our application for the philly music conference (remember that?). it wasn’t until after we sent them one of the pics that we looked at these others and realized we’re showing way too much leg. we didn’t get picked to play.
the new deal compilation – this excellent face down records sampler features two tracks each from nine bands. [taggart’s] contributions, the kinks-like aggro-pop of ‘st. nick‘ and the nirvana surf-blast of ‘lemonade‘, are both standouts. lemonlime’s hypnotic ‘sleep’ achieves a lennon-like genius. the dipsomaniacs contribute three outstanding pop songs including a super-peppy version of the partridge family classic ‘i think i love you’.
this was our second show with all four of us. at the time we were called bender which lasted until the end of 2001. our first show with ward had been two weeks before at the sam adams brewhouse in philly. our setlist for both shows consisted of 8 of the 10 songs from 21, st. nick, lemonade, rotten life and two covers which on this night were “cool” by superchunk and “color me impressed” by the replacements. at sam adams we played “saving my ticket” by superchunk and “allison’s starting to happen” by the lemonheads.
21 – who says punk rock is dead? [taggart] puts a new spin on the genre by letting the important things shine–the songs. while this offering has a ton of attitude and spunk, the really outstanding aspect is the songwriting. the parts flow into one another seamlessly, and the vocals have a nice rasp, like the dead boys.

this was the band’s second ever show after becker started playing with pete and steve. ward wouldn’t join for another two years. our first show (under the name scrapple) had been the night before thanksgiving two months earlier at the overpass in manayunk. by this dobbs show we were called suckers, a name which lasted about a year. we were playing every original song we had plus filling the set out with a bunch of covers. “she’s alive” and “back in the game” were two early songs that were never recorded for any of our cds.
